About the project
Architectural design for the renovation of a Revival-style house, Svoge
This is a very special project, set in the picturesque countryside around the town of Svoge. The brief called for a home in the traditional Bulgarian National Revival style that would revive the spirit of the past and sit naturally in the mountain landscape.
01Structural challenges and solutions
The project was highly complex in both structural and architectural terms, as we were working with a partly ruined existing building on a steeply sloping site. The main challenge was to preserve its authenticity while meeting modern safety standards:
- Retaining the ground floorThe massive stone walls, which had remained stable over time, provided a perfectly sound base.
- Building a new upper floorCarefully supported on and built up from the existing stone base.
02Authentic character and facade details
The house's visual identity pays deep homage to Bulgarian building traditions. To make the facade fully authentic, we incorporated classic details:
- A wide covered verandaA hallmark of Revival architecture, set on the upper floor and oriented to give breathtaking views over the lowlands around Svoge.
- Traditional timber elementsExposed timber braces, massive decorative beams beneath the overhanging roof, and timber-framed windows in a rich walnut colour.
- Facade lanternsThe finishing touch, bathing the stone in soft light and creating a unique sense of warmth.
