About the project
Architectural design: St Mina church
The church is designed to be more than a place of worship: it is intended as a visual and spiritual focal point of the urban landscape in Stara Zagora.
01Exterior design and materials
- CladdingThe building is clad entirely in Vratsa limestone. The warm, creamy tone of the stone gives the church a monumental presence while softening its lines in natural light.
- Decorative friezeAn elegant frieze runs above the main body of the church, forming a visual bridge between the solid stone base and the lighter domes.
- DomesThe central dome and the bell-tower dome are finished in high-quality gilding, so the church will "glow" even on overcast days and stand out like a beacon in its park setting.
02Spatial composition
- Vertical accentThe bell tower is designed as a slender volume that relates to the scale of the central dome.
- A symphony of soundThe bell tower houses seven bells, whose ringing is optimised for the acoustics of the open parkland.
- Integration with the landscapeIts position in a spacious park gives the architecture room to breathe. Free from surrounding urban development, the church reads clearly as a landmark and a place of quiet reflection.
03Why the design works
- Durable materialsVratsa limestone withstands the region's climate and weathers beautifully.
- Light and reflectionThe gold and the pale stone work together to create a changing appearance throughout the day.
- Spiritual presenceThe seven bells carry biblical symbolism (the number of completeness) and produce a rich, full sound for festive services.
